Using Beyond the GED
Step 3: Focus on an aspect of your practice
Beyond the GED: An Overview
- Learners investigate labor market trends regarding jobs, employment, and wages in Unit 1: The Labor Market. Learners examine how the global economy, downsizing, and temporary work impact the U.S. economy. They will understand the difference between minimum and living wages, calculating what is needed as a living wage for workers in their communities.
- In Unit 2: Pursuing Higher Education, learners explore the economic impact of higher education, particularly college, and examine the connection between education and earnings for a variety of occupations. Learners consider motivations for attaining a GED credential and their own reasons for attending or not attending college.
- Finally, in Unit 3: What the Research Tells Us, learners read and discuss the research findings on the economic impact of the GED and consider the implications these findings have for policy, GED programs, and their own future.
How to use this guide:
- Scan through Lessons 1, 2, and 3 in Unit 1; Lessons 1 and 2 in Unit 2; and Lessons 1 and 3 in Unit 3, noting key points. For each lesson, write down the key message(s) for students and note what the benefits for learners might be in knowing the lesson content. How might these lessons work with your learners?
- Then reflect on how and when you might use Beyond the GED: Making Conscious Choices About the GED and Your Future in your instruction and/or program?
